Types of Steel Materials and Their Uses

Steel is a versatile material that can be utilized for a variety of reasons. Steel is used in over 55% of all cars. The alloy used to make it determines its versatility, as they impact the material’s strength, durability and performance. For instance, the method the process of cooling the metal can have a significant impact on its microstructure, and consequently its overall properties. It is manipulated to attain specific characteristics like machinability yielding strength, and corrosion resistance.

Steel is iron that has other elements alloyed to it in order to enhance its physical properties and make it suitable for particular uses. The proportions of these additional alloying elements determine which steel type it belongs to, and thereby its overall performance across different applications.

For instance, stainless is made up of at least 11% chromium. This makes it resistant against corrosion. This characteristic is what makes it ideal for a variety of applications like kitchen utensils and cutlery. Tool steel is a popular choice because of its hardness and resistance to abrasion. It’s also used for hand tools and machine dies. Carbon steels also lend themselves to a variety of applications because of their high ductility. Electrical steel on the other hand, is an example of a very specialized grade of steel that is composed of silicon (typically 3%). This improves its magnetic properties and decreases eddy-current losses. It is therefore ideal for laminations and transformer cores of electric motors.
